We’re a little more than three weeks away from tryouts, which will be held February 24, 25 & 26. Make sure you’re registered with the school, are academically eligible, have your spring sports fee paid, and have your physical.
What will tryouts look like? Our evaluations will be qualitative and quantitative.
QUALITATIVE:
Over the school and club seasons these past 12 months, we’ve been teaching mechanics, poise, body language & strategy. We’re looking for players who demonstrate a good grasp of these aspects to be players who can help us win games.
We’ll consider performance over the past year, performance in our winter workouts, and what candidates demonstrate at tryouts. We’ll take infielders who aren’t afraid to get in front of ground balls. We want outfielders who track fly balls. We’re looking at the amount of ground fielders cover (range). We’re looking for throwing mechanics. Our hitting evaluations will consider bat speed, plate coverage, balance, and consistency. We’re looking at body language that projects confidence & poise.
QUANTITATIVE
These are measurables. We’ll time candidates for a 60-yard sprint & mile run. We’ll measure throwing velocity. We’ll measure pop times of catchers. We’ll test leg endurance by timing wall sits. We’ll see how many push-ups candidates can do.
A written test will be given to check for baseball IQ. The test will consist of game situations and our program’s points of emphasis.
The coaches will meet on the 26th to determine the rosters for our JV and varsity teams. We expect between 35 and 40 potential players to try out. Our varsity roster will be somewhere in the range of 14 players. JV may have between 12 and 16 players. Our Level 3 coaches will select a roster for their spring season afterward. No one is guaranteed a roster spot in the spring.
PARTICIPATION Vs. WINNING
The spring season is about selecting players who can help us win baseball games. Even players who fully participated in the 2024 spring, summer, and/or fall seasons are not guaranteed a varsity or junior varsity roster spot.
For players not selected to JV or varsity, it’s not over. Our baseball boosters offer multiple opportunities over the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Players not making JV or varsity in 2025 can still develop into players who help us win in the future. Players selected for 2025 JV and varsity are not guaranteed spring roster spots in the years to come. It’s not over.
We have an exciting spring ahead of us and we’re eager to get started. I trust candidates will do everything in their power to make an impression at tryouts.
